Computer Numerical Control (CNC)

CNC Plasma Cutters

Computer numerical control (CNC) is a computer controller that reads instructions in order to guide a machine tool, a powered mechanical device typically used to fabricate components by the selective removal of material. In other words, for a plasma cutting machine CNC tells the plasma torch where to cut!

With the increased automation of manufacturing processes with CNC machining, considerable improvements in speed, consistency and quality have been seen.

Several CNC machines may be combined into one station, a "cell", to progressively machine a part requiring several steps. CNC machines today are controlled directly from files created by CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) software packages, so that a part or assembly can go directly from design to manufacturing without the need of producing a drafted paper drawing of the manufactured component.

Parametric Programming

A more recent advancement in CNC interpreters is support of logical commands, known as parametric programming. Parametric programs incorporate both G-code and these logical constructs to create a programming language and syntax similar to BASIC.

Parametric programming also enables custom machining cycles, such as creating fixtures creation or bolt circles. If you want to create additional fixture locations, you can guide the machine by hand to the new location and the fixture subroutine called.

Because of these features, a parametric program is more efficient than using CAD/CAM software for large part runs.

Putting all the elements together, this text addresses CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology in a comprehensive format that offers abundant illustrations, examples and exercises. It includes a strong foundation in blue print reading, graphical descriptions of CNC machine tools, a chapter on right triangle trigonometry and programming that uses Fanuc Controllers. It emphasizes program pattern recognition and contains completely solved programming examples and self-contained programming examples. Thoroughly updated for this edition, it includes two new chapters, four new appendices, and is bundled with Predator Simulation and Kwik Trig software.

CNC Programming Handbook, Third EditionCNC Programming Handbook, Third Edition

Over its first two editions, this best-selling book has become the de facto standard for training and reference material at all levels of CNC programming. Used in hundreds of educational institutions around the world as the primary text for CNC courses, and used daily by many in-field CNC programmers and machine operators, this book literally defines CNC programming. Written with careful attention to detail, there are no compromises. Many of the changes in this new Third Edition are the direct result of comments and suggestions received from many CNC professionals in the field. This extraordinarily comprehensive work continues to be packed with over one thousand illustrations, tables, formulas, tips, shortcuts, and practical examples.

The enclosed CD-ROM now contains a fully functional 15-day shareware version of CNC tool path editor/simulator, NCPlotâ„¢. This powerful, easy-to-learn software includes an amazing array of features, many not found in competitive products. NCPlot offers an unmatched combination of simplicity of use and richness of features. Support for many advanced control options is standard, including a macro interpreter that simulates Fanuc and similar macro programs.

The CD-ROM also offers many training exercises based on individual chapters, along with solutions and detailed explanations. Special programming and machining examples are provided as well, in form of complete machine files, useful as actual programming resources. Virtually all files use Adobe PDF format and are set to high resolution printing.
